Step outside your sector and take a look

Sometimes we can get obsessed with the comings and goings of our own business. Or even life in the sector that we work in, so much so that it’s easy to forget there’s a world outside. And that world is full of learning and experiences we can draw on.

This week I’ll be working with an oil services company, and I have no doubt that one of the things I will bring to the program will be experiences I bring from working with companies in other sectors: technology, commercial vehicles, automotive, telecoms to name a few.

I’m fortunate because the very nature of our business puts me in those different sectors. But there’s nothing to stop you and your colleagues spending some time talking to people (people in similar roles is a good place to start), who are operating in different sectors.

If it’s ‘sales’, how do they differentiate their prop? How do they keep their prices up? How do they manage key accounts? And so on. You might be surprised what you learn. And they’ll learn something from you too.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes. It might just give you that edge.
